What Does Swelling On A Side Of Head In Infants Mean?

My 3 month old granddaughter has had a swelling on the side of her head. It comes and goes since last thrusday, its not there all the time. My daughter inlaw has made a doctor appointment for monday, but shes a mess. The baby had a cold last week, could this have something to do with it?
