What Is Causing The Scratchiness And Soreness Of My Voice Box?

It seems to run in our family, but I've really been noticing it lately and that is I start to lose my voice. It sounds dry, quiet and speaking in a normal tone can be hard, but if I speak louder, it seems to be better. But i've actually been noticing that my voicebox gets a little scratchy and sore. I think it's allergies, but not sure... it's been something I've been experiencing most of my adult life, but really noticing it at 43.

Is there anything which might help soothe my voice and clear it up?
