What Is The Best Way To Measure Heart Rate?

Hey , I will make an experiment in my biology class . I will measure the heart rate of athletes and non-athletes at rest , after vigorous exercise and the time taken for their heart rate to return back to normal. What is the best way to measure the heart-rate with a not really complicated machine? Thank you in advance :)
