What Is The Purpose Of CT Scan In A Person With Low Oxygen Levels In Lungs?

Yesterday I had a chest exray and doctor said I had very little oxygen in my lungs due to a bad cold. Today they call and ask if I have had previous lung exrays and stated they saw something on the left side and I would need a CT scan. What would this show them and what could be wrong?
