What Is The Remedy For Vaginal Infection?

I'm a 41 year old woman in good health. No surgeries or hospitalizations. I'm 5' 5" and 145 pounds. One pregnancy to abortion and no children. I thought I had a vaginal infection for the past month or six weeks because of an odor. Then I was putting in a tampon and felt something strange. I pulled out a condom. And another tampon. I have no idea how long either have been in there. Quite possible for over a month. And now I am alarmed that I may have gotten TSS or other infection. By coincidence I am seeing my gynecologist in 5 days. Are there any symptoms I should watch out for that I would send me to the emergency room. I'm fine with waiting for the doctor in 5 days, but I am completely alarmed and afraid I already have an infection. Should I go to the Emergency Room for a pelvic examination?
