What Is The Safe Way For Birth Control?

My girlfriend has been using petogen for 3years but has stopped 3months ago,that is she had the last 12week injection on 25January2011...she recently got her1st period but she wants to either go back on petogen,or start using the pill...what is the safer option,and when would be the best time to start it..?
