What Is The Treatment For Itchy Anus?

I've had pruritis ani for a while, and have seen a doctor about it. He recommended a calomine-type cream to use, and it has helped, but I still wake up at night sometimes scratching in that area. I'm concerned that the scratching will cause permanent damage to the skin around the anus. Any suggestions?
