What Is The Treatment For Redness And Pain In The Ankle?

My 19 year old son injured both of his ankles last week doing competitive gymnastics and was placed in air boot (casts). Initial radiographs were negative and he is awaiting MRI's on both ankles.The right ankle was broken 2 years ago and required extensive surgery. The entire right foot became very swollen and bruised within a couple of days and now the outer aspect of his ankle is red and quite hot ( approx 3 " circumference). The pain is worse than last week and is extremely bad in the posterior part of his ankle. The left has no hot spots and is slowly improving. When he had his surgery we were told that his ankle was a mess and that it looked like an ankle of a 70 year old. Your thoughts?? Thank you.
