What Is The Treatment For Redness And Swelling Of Thumb?

My mother just got admitted into the hospital. A week ago her thumb was red and swollen, she said it just felt numb. No other symptoms, but I'm wondering why they are admitting her now... Im out of town and have know idea whats happening would you know why they would admit her ???
