What Steroids Are Used For Pain Post Tonsillectomy?

My stepson is 38 and had his tonsils taken out 3 weeks ago, they were the size of a $.50cent piece and infected He is still in a lot of pain and went to his regular MD and he gave him steroids with the word menthol in it, he lives in another state, He said he took his dose last night and all ready feels better. I told his father to make sure he takes All the medicine - Can you tell me What the Name is of this Steroid is and side effects?
