What Would Cause Pain That Started On The Left Side

What would cause pain that started on the left side of my neck, felt like "stiff neck". Went to the back of my neck, (most uncomfortable) then to the right side of my neck and shoulder? Pain has subsided on the left and right but still evident at the mid back about 3 in. down.
