When Does Low-Ogestrel Start Being Effective?

My girlfriend just got prescribed to the birth control pill low-ogestrel today, and the gynecologist said to wait til her next period starts to begin taking it, but that it won't be til after her next period that it'll be effective. I've read online that it only takes 7 days, so which one is correct?
