When Does Birth Control Pills Become Effective To Control Pregnancy?

Hi, I'm one week late on starting my new birth control pill pack and wanted to know, if I take my pill regularly for the next month, will it be safe to resume having sexual intercourse in a couple weeks? Or do we have a much higher risk of pregnancy now?
