Why Does Both Of My Hands Go Numb When I Am Asleep?

While I am asleep both of my hands "fall asleep" and go numb to the point that they hurt and wake me up several times throughout the night. I usally sllep on my side with my arms bent and in front of me. I have to shake them and straighten my arms for couple minutes in order to get them to stop hurting.
