Why Is Surgery Required For Aortic Aneursym?

Hi my boyfriend was diagnosed with an aortic aneursym in 2012 and was treated with blood pressure and cholesterol medications. In december he went for a re-evaluation with a mri. His cardiologist is sending him to a surgeon. What is going on? why not a interventional radiologist?
