Why Is The Blood Thick And Dark During Periods?

I am on generic seasonique birth control in which I only have a period every 3 months. With this menstrual period I am becoming very ill (headache and nausea) when I bleed. The blood is thick, dark, and very light. I took a pregnancy test and it came up negative. Should I be worried?
