Why The Menstrual Periods Are Delaying?

hi, i was suppose to have my period at the begining of the this month and i never got it i did take a pregnancy test and it came out negative..since yesterday i have noticed some brownish spotting..what do you think is going on..i'm 35 and a little over weight..please help me understand..
