Will Birth Control Be Effective If Started After A Menstrual Period?

I've been taking birth control pills for the last 4 or so months. My period just ended Sunday evening and I haven't started my new pack yet. If I take a pill (or 2) right now, is it even going to be effective this month or will I just be wasting a pill pack?
