After A Noticeable Swelling That Was Isolated To A Ridge

after a noticeable swelling that was isolated to a ridge along the insde of my left cheek, i found a small brown dot on the inside of the cheek's swelling. But now that the swelling has ceased, I am unsure if the spot has anything or everything to do with that spot. It looks like any other skin mole that is plane surfaced, but I am concerned about the most effective way of determining if the spot is of any consequence. I am a on and off smoker. I think spots on my skin, just as in my mouth, when abnormal, should be checked. What possibilities are there that this is a form of mouth cancer?
