I Have Been Diagonised Lately As Having A Retinal Detachment

i have been diagonised lately as having a retinal detachment , my doctor says i should have a surgery called scleral buckle otherwise i ll completely detach, in fact i heve been living with this problem for more than ten years why did it not detach all this time and what is the use of such a surgery if it will not recover my vision as it should
