My Doc Said My Ear Drum Looked Dull And Wanted

my doc said my ear drum looked dull and wanted to send me to an ent specialist for further investigation. I am 62 yrs old and recently had an "echo sound" in my ear. It went away on its own. I have had previous episode of vertigo - about 3 years ago. what does the dull ear drum mean.
