My Father Has Copd And In The Last 10 Months

my father has copd and in the last 10 months has lost about 15 lbs. Lately he has become hoarse and has begun spitting up this black substance. His breathing has become after doing minimal tasks in the low 80s. His doctor ordered a chest xray but has not conveyed anything to either of us. I am not sure as to what to do for him. He is also continuously trying to clear his throat.
