My Son Is A Month And Half Old And Lately

my son is a month and half old and lately he has started gagging and when that happens I have to take a rag and wipe out his mucus. its really thick and sticky. and when he spits up its really thick and he spits up more than he eats. his doctor told it was reflex. is that normal? does reflex cause that?
