My Wifes Father Started Feeling His Right Calf Numb And

my wifes father started feeling his right calf numb and it slowly creeped up to his hip, it all happened about a month ago and is not getting better. is there anything he should do to ease the nerve pain? what is happening? is there any advice you can give him, anything would be grateful!
