What Happens To The Blood Clot That Has Caused A

what happens to the blood clot that has caused a stroke after the stroke has occurred? my father had a stroke 2 days ago which caused paralysis in the left leg and arm. After 6 hours he could move the arm and leg again. After 24 hours the paralysis had returned. i am seeking to understand why this could happen. thank you.
