When My Great Grandson Was Born His Shoulder Was Caught

when my great grandson was born his shoulder was caught in the birth canal and he was diagnosed with brachial plexus and has been told all the nerves in his shoulder are damaged and some are dying if not already died. Could this cause his arm to wither away?
