Stay Hydrated: Sickling of red blood cells increases when a person is dehydrated. To avoid this, drink about three to three-and-half liters of water every day. Doing so helps in maintaining the fluidity of blood and reduces chances of sickle cell amassing.
Take a balanced high calorie diet: People with SCA have reduced energy levels, and to overcome this condition, a diet with appropriate calories is very important. Managing a small and frequent diet pattern ensures continuous energy supply. Include healthy carbohydrates from whole grains, cereals and fresh fruits.
Avoid fat and add Fiber: Avoid saturated fats and include salad, raw vegetables and fruits in the daily diet. This would take control of the mineral and vitamin supply to the body. Add whole grains and cereals in your daily diet.
Include folic acid, Vit B12 and Vit B6 in daily diet: A combination diet with avocado, baked potato, oily fish, poultry, fortified cereals, whole grains, soy and its products, meat and fruits like plantain, banana and watermelons ensures a daily supply of these nutrients. Exercise: Exercising promotes the production of red blood cells. People with SCA experience fatigue and tiredness more often than others. Avoid triggers: The sickling of red blood cells may get triggered in certain conditions like extreme temperatures, high altitude, smoking, stress, alcohol consumption and chronic lack of sleep. It is therefore best to stay away from these triggers and lead a healthy and active life.
