Tom Brokaw of NBC news was a victim of Multiple Myeloma and has been receiving treatment. 1-4 in 100,000 people develop myeloma every year. It constitutes 1% of all cancers and is the second most common hematological malignancy in the U.S.
What is multiple myeloma ?
Multiple Myeloma, also known as plasma cell myeloma, is a cancer of plasma cells. Plasma cells produce antibodies and are a type of white blood cells. Multiple Myeloma usually arises in bone marrow and result in multiplication of plasma cells.
In Multiple Myeloma, abnormal plasma cells accumulate in bone marrow, thus interfering in the production of normal blood cells. In most cases, there happens to be production of paraprotein, which causes kidney problems.
What causes Multiple Myeloma ?
Scientists have no exact knowledge on the cause of this strange and deadly cancer. Researchers point out that it is more common in men, particularly with African-Americans.
