Parabens are the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetic products to prevent the growth of a broad range of microorganisms like bacteria and fungus. Chemically, parabens are esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid.

parabens

The most commonly used parabens are:

  • Methylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Butylparaben

Usually, more than one paraben is used in a product. They are used in mixtures as even a small amount of a preservative provides a high range of preservation. They are added in shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/ parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solutions, makeup and toothpaste.

A few studies in the past have detected parabens in breast tumors, as it has weak oestrogen like properties. However, it does not show that parabens cause cancer or that they are harmful in any way. Due to this, over the last few years, in response to customer concerns, many brands have started to manufacture paraben free products.

Furthermore, there are few studies found that the most potent paraben tested, butylparaben, showed 10,000 to 100,000 fold less activity than the naturally occurring estradiol (a form of oestrogen). They are used in very low levels in cosmetics and other products. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the WHO consider the chemicals safe at low levels.

There is a reason to be worried, but no reason to have an aparll consuming concern about these chemicals. If one wants to play it extremely safe, there are paraben free products available in various brands.
