Your face skin has its own unique needs, which can change over time. So before you buy expensive face creams, take some time to consider what your skin type is and what product will benefit you. Face creams can be grouped into several broad categories: those for a specific skin type, those designed for day or night, and those that offer added benefits.
In both cosmetic and clinical domains, skin type can affect the choice of formulation base for face cream. For normal to oily skin, gels are preferred. For normal to dry skin, lotions are usually selected. For dry skin, creams are the preferred base. You will need a face cream specifically for the skin type as mentioned below:
Dry Skin
If you often notice cracking, flaking, itching and premature wrinkling, you probably have dry skin. This type of skin needs an oil-based cream or lotion that contains petrolatum or another emollient.
Oily Skin
You have oily skin if your face becomes shiny or greasy looking by midday. You will need a water-based moisturizer that is oil-free.
Normal Skin
Very fortunate people have normal skin. If your skin type is normal you will need a light, water based moisturizer to maintain it.
Combinatio Skin
If you get oiliness in T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) but the rest of the skin is normal or dry, then you have combination skin. You will need to apply a light, water based cream after washing the T-zone with a gel based or “soapy” cleanser.
Sensitive Skin
You have sensitive skin, if it gets red, dry, scaly, irritated and peels. To deal with this type of skin, chose a skin cream that is gentle and soothing, has hydrators like mineral oil, glycerin, dimethicone, petrolatum, and does not contain irritants like perfume, dye, parabens, lanolin and formaldehyde.
No matter what skin type you have, its needs will change with age. For example, once you hit your 30s, you may begin to notice age spots or some sun damage. In your 40s, your skin begins to thin and become less elastic, which could mean more wrinkles. In your 50s your skin will become lax and wrinkly. Circles under your eyes will become prominent. You will need to keep changing your face cream according to the changes in your skin.
