Question: 46 year old male, hit in the right buttock with a racquetball by opponent during racquetball match approximately 6 hours ago. It has already begun to bruise and is painful. An hour ago Experienced painful cramping in that thigh accompanied by chills. Can the chills and cramping be related to the bruising injury?

It sounds like you have broken some blood vessels in that area and the bruising and cramping is related to the blood irritating the muscles. Chills may also be a result of a systemic response to the blood. As long as you are not on any blood thinners, it would not be expected that this would become a major problem, such as forming a large pocket of blood that might need to be drained.

At this point I would just recommend applying cold to that area, as well as using an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen for the pain. The cold should help to decrease the blood flow to that area and minimize the bruising. It is expected that this area will be sore for the next several days to few weeks, but should resolve completely in most cases.
