Question: I was diagnosed with an iron deficiency awhile back, so I started taking 65 mg elemental iron with 1000 mg of vitamin C. I took it for two months and brought my ferritin levels from 5 to 29. My doctor wants me to take more for the next 6 months. However, since starting my exercise regimen, I've noticed that I've stopped absorbing iron (my feces are normal brown and not blackish now, which I know is a sign of malabsorption). I've moved my exercise time to the evening instead of the morning. Yesterday, I took my iron and vitamin C pills without food, and I did fine, so I tried it again today. However, I just had diarrhea and a little heartburn, so that doesn't work. I'm thinking of changing iron pills to see if that helps. Is there anything else I can do to increase the liklihood of the iron absorbing? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Take iron polypeptides.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns.

A better salt called Iron polypeptides are used these days. Start it at a dose of 12 mg and after one month taper it to 6mg per day for a period of 2 months.

Bioavailabilty of iron polypeptides are very high and they are usually without any side effects and are very well tolerated by patients.

So switch over to iron polypetide tablet 12 mg a day.It won't cause gastritis or any other problem.
Hope i was helpful.
Thanks!

I'm a vegetarian, and I read iron polypeptides are made from animals. I'm not opposed to it necessarily, but will it hurt me since I don't normally eat animals?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
As per my knowledge(As this issue has never been addresed by me before) what i think is that Proferrin is an oral iron supplement made from naturally sourced heme iron polypeptide (HIP), which is iron derived from bovine hemoglobin so yes it is a animal based product.
I would suggest you to take elemental iron with vitamin c to increase absorption.
Avoid taking phylates like tea etc an hour after taking it.
Lastly try to get it directly from vegetarian food like Spinach carrot etc.
Thank you.
