Question: 80 year old female in reasonably good health, two bp tabs, mild diabetic, several ulcers in bottom of stomach. Feel good, no pain.
Recently had blood discharge from vagina in early morning hours, like after 2 am, perhaps about 1/4 teaspoon full. After arising and moving around no more discharge for rest of day. Have been to
Dr,(internist) he found slight irritation indicated at the entrance of vagina, nothing more. Have to wear bladder pads because of leakage every time I stand up. Have had hystro done 30+ years ago.
Any idea would help.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to vaginal atrophy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Post menopausal bleeding is a common problem however the most common cause is a problem with the endometrial lining of the uterus.

In your case , with a history of a hysterectomy, this is not a possibility so other causes must be considered.

The other causes can be divided into gyneacological and non gynaecological. The most common gynaecological causes would be vaginal atrophy or dryness or problems related to the cervix if it was a subtotal hysterectomy.
The vaginal dryness would respond to topical estrogen replacement creams and a pap smear would be able to assess the state of the cervix to determine if there are any problems with it.
Lesions of the ovary can also cause this symptom and this can be detected on ultrasound.

In terms of non gynaecological causes, this is not as common but has been documented in the medical literature. This can happen due to blood thinners like aspirin intake.
Other causes are infiltration of a lesion into the vaginal area.
This is not meant to alarm, if it has I apologize. You may want to consider visiting your doctor for an assessment which may include comprehensive imaging and blood investigations (full blood count, ESR (checks for inflammation), kidney blood tests such as creatinine. CEA)
Regards.

Thank you for your attention. Have another appointment with Dr in the morning.
He did have blood test run, and hopefully something can be done soon.
This morning there was much more blood. Fresh red and no clotting.
You are right about the dryness.
Thank you.

Forgot to say, don't take any kind of aspirin or blood thinner.

Brief Answer:
Do wait for the results.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Do wait for blood test results. Vaginal atrophy seems to be the most likely cause in your case.
Hope my answer is helpful.
