Question : A large swollen lump appeared on the side of my penis, just over half way up below the head, and it doesn't appear to be going away after several days. It is soft to the touch, the skin has not changed colour or texture and it doesn't itch or cause any other discomfort in itself, but if I press on the base of the penis on the same side as the lump then it is very tender, and it feels that there is a very tight "line" (I want to say ligament or something like that but I know that's not right) which is causing the pain compared to the other side. What is likely to have caused this, and should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
inflammation involving hair follicle most likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, the tender lump on side of penis indicates
inflammation involving hair follicle as folliculitis most likely.

Kindly give me further information so that I can answer your query more precisely.

1. Had you shaved pubic region hair just around time of onset of the event?
2. How many times you need to take analgesic tablet per day ?
3. If possible and no objection, a photo pic of the lump as an attachment
during follow up discussion will help great to evaluate it.

Awaiting for your response.
Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I have trimmed with clippers but not shaven the area in the last week. However the lump is approximately 1 inch in diameter and there is no redness or head or anything else like that. I only tried taking the ibuprofen once to see if it would make any difference - it didn't seem to. The pain is not severe but there is a dull aching in the right side of my groin, extending to the base of the penis but no further. I will try to attach a photo but I can't see how to do that at the moment.

Brief Answer:
follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the relevant details.

* As there is history of clipper use for trimming, there might be pulling of
some hair follicle root and chain of events might be started.

* Though there is not severe pain, precise management of the same is
needed to prevent further spread of infection or inflammation process.

Start applying ice over the area 3-4 times a day, which will help to some extent till you manage photo attachment process ( which is on your same screen as attach reports task bar or if problem, just contact our expert customer care executive to assist you for the same ).

Wish you best recovery.
Regards.
