Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for being motivated to to try to quit smoking

Quitting smoking is not very difficult rather easy provided one understands and then follows the process of addiction and process of de-addiction.

Ideally, strategy is tailor made to the individuals. Factors that modify strategies are age, whether using any other drugs, presence of any other medical illness or psychiatric illness like depression / anxiety, family problems etc.

However, broadly, as an overview following are various approaches (in various combinations) are:

1. Nicotine replacement therapy: here smoking is replaced by non-harmful form of nicotine for initial period

2. Detoxification: Management of withdrawal symptoms and trying to eliminate the toxic effects of smoking.

3. Relapse prevention counseling: drugs are used to decrease craving for smoking, other psychological issues are dealt with

4. Effective treatment of associated medical / surgical conditions or psychiatric illness , if any

Hope this piece of information would be helpful

All the best
