Question: MY son is 5 and taking Cetirizine 1 mg/ml syrup by mouth in morning. 7.5 ML every morning.
He has a terrible cough. Can I give him anything? I have Delsym 12 hr (over the counter) and a previous prescription for him of Bromphen/pseudo/dextro hbr syrup. 3/4 tsp every 4 to 6 hrs as needed for cough and congestion?

Brief Answer:
Give some expectorant rather than cough suppressant. Steam inhalation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details provided by you. It seems that your child is suffering from a viral infection. Usually it is associated with an allergic reaction and so some anti allergic like cetirizine needs to be given. I insist that you continue the medicine for 4-5 days.

When our respiratory sections become thick, they need to be coughed out. Under normal circumstances these secretions come out on their own without our realization, so the solution would be in diluting the cough, not suppressing it. Delsyn contains dextromethorphan which is a cough suppressant. I would not advise you to give this medicine or the other one mentioned (Brom/pseudo/dex) and so I am not commenting on the dose. Rather give some expectorant or mucolytic like Ambrolyte if you wish, you can get it by local doctor prescription. Steam acts as a very good expectorant and so steam inhalation is likely to help.

Hope that helps
