Question : Hello! I had an unprotected sexual encounter 10 weeks ago with someone of unknown status. I had a PCR RNA test 17 days after exposure which was negative. I then followed up with an antibody test 9 weeks after the encounter which was also negative (not sure if the test was ELISA or ICMA). Is it safe to say that these two tests together would rule out HIV for me? Should I do another test in a few weeks? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Yes further test advised at 12 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at the HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

Yes you must take 4 th generation ELISA test at 12 weeks and a follow up test at 6 months. The test at 10 weeks is negative so the probability of tests being negative is high. But conclusive test recommendations as per norms.

Take care
Hope I answered your query.

Thanks very much. So, even with the negative PCR RNA test in conjunction with the antibody test its not conclusive? The probability that I test positive in the future is exceptionally low, correct?

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The tests are considered conclusive only after 12 weeks. But still 6 months follow up test is advised. Yes probability of negative test to remain negative is quite high.

Take care
