Are A Common Cold, Discomfort In My Upper Abdominal Area And Bloating Serious Signs Of Stomach Cancer?

Question: Last week I suffered from a common cold which gave me no stomach symptoms. I shook it off at around Thursday but starting Wednesday is when I began having this dull discomfort in my upper abdominal area that is constant throughout the whole day and unrelenting, a little bit worse at night. I also feel very full and sometimes bloated after meals. It is mostly mild and can go unnoticed when I become distracted with my daily activities, but it always feels to be present in some way. My stools are also softer now and I became particularly worried today when I saw my stool tonight was a light brown color and had these large orange/reddish patches on them. I became increasingly anxious because I fear it might be blood, though yesterday night I did have a pizza for dinner and watermelon for dessert and maybe that’s what caused the change in the color.

I am now in a constant state of anxiety believing I might have stomach cancer and cannot stop thinking about it, the fear is dominating my thoughts throughout the days and nights. I don’t know if this might be related but I took Ibuprofen 600mg for a sore throat last Tuesday (the day before my stomach discomfort began) morning without eating anything. I figured it might have damaged my gut in some way but if that’s the case is it normal for the discomfort to persist throughout the whole day and for a whole six days straight? I am really hoping it’s not stomach cancer, I’m very afraid.

I’m getting blood tests and turning in a fecala nd urine sample to the doctor’s next Monday and I am wondering also if those blood tests could detect any potential anomaly in my stomach and if they will be able to tell if there might be occult blood in the sample (or do they have to order a specific test for that? My GP wrote for a search for H Pylori)

I should also add that I found no blood whatsoever when wiping after the stool situation I mentioned, but the stool was very loose

one more addition: I don%E2%80%99t usually use Ibuprofen or related drugs at all whatsoever, it was mostly my mother who insisted I take it for my sore throat at the time

Brief Answer:
less possible to be a cancer. To get convinced- consult Gastroenterologist

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.

In my view, at first sight your symptoms are more likely due to -
- Hyper acidity caused by the Ibugesic pill you had on an empty stomach... it had irritated/ injured your stomach mucus membrane . It would take few days to recover if not taken care of OR would be exaggerated with spicy diet, alcohol, smoking or psychological stress & tension. The reddish patches in stools were due to the dinner contents( watermelon). The diarrhea you have can be post viral infection... would be controlled by antibiotic like Ofloxacin taken after discussing it with your treating doctor.
I don't know why, but you seem to be scared of stomach cancer... looking at your age it does not seem to be a possibility. Heriditory predisposition, age after 55 years, obesity & chronic gastric irritation due to alcohol, smoking, very spicy food , H pylori infection, working in coal or rubber industry are the risk factors. The main symptom along with gastric & digestive disturbances is, lack of appetite & loss of weight without any efforts to loose weight.
I have given all the possible risk factors, for you to co relate & get off the suspicion & to be careful to adopt lifestyle changes to avoid any of such condition in future.
Self care- avoid the risk factors/ take treatment for gastritis, loose motions with consultation to doctor.
In case you are still tense - you should consult a Gastroenterologist . He would assess your health with few investigations like endoscopy to exclude / find the problem you are afraid of followed by prompt needful treatment.
I hope that helps you. Any other information you need , please feel free to ask.
Thanks

Hi, thank you for your fast response. It is very relieving to hear that the chances are low. I have two more questions for peace of mind...

The watermelon slice I ate, I had it the night before not for dinner the same night that the stool came out with the reddish patch. Does that still more or less confirm the watermelon?

And the second query, well... I had an endoscopy conducted about two years ago that gave an all clear (no ulcers, no cancer). Is it possible that in this span of two years I could have developed a cancer and be feeling these symptoms because of it? Should I make an appt with a gastroenterologist and ask for another endoscopy?

Brief Answer:
Consult a Gastroenerologist.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for the follow up query.

Standard time for elimination of digested food in form of stool is 53 hours on an average, provided the motion pattern is normal. From this point of view the water melon eaten about 36 hours before can be excreted out & show the color in stools.( it being fruit with sufficient fiber & water content... is excreted earlier.)
In case cancer is to occur it can appear within few days or months... what about 2 years after your last endoscopy. But the fact that you were hell & hearty till the viral infection in reference & the abdominal pain can be explained on the basis of Ibugesic pill taken on an empty stomach & digestive upset by post viral loose motions & bloating....again red color to stool by water melon.....you do not give any history of loss of appetite & weight loss, it's absurd to think it to be a cancer !
Still looking at your typical psychology, I would suggest for symptomatic treatment of the problems in consultation of a Gastroenterologist & let him decide about need of endoscopy. Discuss your doubt with him & get fully satisfied.
I hope that answers your query. Any follow up query is welcome. In case you don't have any follow up query, please close the query & before that grade the answer.
Thanks.
