Are Cancer And Immune Cells Present In Tumor?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: An academic question. I had seen on youtube a British researcher say that 40% of a tumor is cancer cells and 60% is immune system cells. When I tried to do a search on this on the net I cannot find it again. Most talk about tumor heterogeneity. Can you point me to some research papers or websites on the make up of a tumor, what cells are found there? Thanks. .

Brief Answer:
Yes, some immune cells are always there in cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

It is nice to know that you have won the battle against cancer. You are interested in cancer biology, which is great!

It is true that immune cells are present in cancer tumors, but their proportion varies from tumor to tumor and patient to patient because of wide variations in tumor biology. It is not something which is fixed at 40%. Apart from immune cells another very important component is the stroma or niche of the tumor.

I would recommend you to read a nice review on immune system and cancer at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/

Another good one about tumor microenvironment can be found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/

And this one http://www.elsevier.com/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/115721/current-problems-in-cancer-article-3.pdf

Hope I have answered your query. I will be available for further followup queries, if any.
