Are Cold, Migraine And Fatigue Symptoms Of HIV?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: I had a fling with a woman while I was working in Kiev in the Ukraine [which has a fairly high incidence of HIV]. We always wore a condom, but had oral without [I performed cunnilingus]. I had a cold [although not a sore throat] at this time we had sex and I performed cunnilingus on her an hour after cleaning my teeth [although there was not bleeding when I spat out and I have a soft tooth brush]. About 10 days/ 2 weeks after the first time I had symptoms of a migraine for 2 days - feeling very weak, aching body, headache; it lasted for 2 days [the third day I was better but a little weak]. Then a weak later after another poor night's sleep I awoke to a headache and tiredness [but not the aching body]. I am concerned because this was about a week after I had recovered from a cold and I thought that I should have built up immunity. It did occur after I had a vey poor night's sleep [I had been online I could not sleep after]. Clearly I had a virus of some sort and I wondered whether this was primary HIV infection. Also shortly after we met i had a few spots on my chest [around 5], which they went quite quickly. My oral hygiene is good - I do not have lesions or ulcers in my mouth or bleeding gums. Sometimes I spit out small amounts of blood with my saliva when I clean my teeth although it was not the case at this time. There was no menstrual blood, but I am concerned.

Brief Answer:
The risk is minimal!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this possible exposure and all the inconveniences this has caused you. I have reviewed your symptoms and the surrounding circumstances concerning a possible infection and the chances are very low. Worries are real but for sure there is little chance that you got infected from this encounter. Also, your symptoms are not typical of acute HIV seroconversion symptoms. For sure, these symptoms could be confused with a possible seroconversion symptoms but they are not specific and bear very little weight in shifting the balance towards HIV. Spitting up blood is not also typical of HIV infection.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
