Question: I have a lot of acid buildup in my throat from my throat. At night the burning wakes me up and I have to take an antacid. I also burp a lot. Could I have a hilarious hernia?
That is not what I typed. XXXXXXX hernia I don't know how to spell it.

Brief Answer:
GERD - Gastroesophageal sphincter disease.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Noted the history and understood the concerns. This is called Hiatus or Hiatal Hernia. Build up of acid in throat, lots of burping, particularly waking you up at night from sleep is all indicative of a condition called GERD that is gastroesophageal reflux disease. There may be an accompanying hiatus hernia or may not be present as the basic cause GERD is lax lower esophageal sphincter.

Anxiety, stress, some foods and beverages instigate or enhance the problem. I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Get started with a PPI like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole.
- Antacids to be taken when on an empty stomach.
- Control of stress and anxiety if you have.
- Choose foods and beverages that do not instigate or enhance the problems.
- Early dinner.
- Walk around after food.
- Sleep in a propped up position.
All these efforts should help you well. If not, then the best way is to go for an upper GI Endoscopy to know the exact diagnosis so that any additional treatment can be added to give you the best possible results.

I hope this answers your query and helps you too. Take care.
