Posted on Wed, 7 Jan 2015
Question: Hello, I started taking champix tablets 2weeks ago and I had just had my period before I started the tablets. As I reached day 10 I was still smoking but had bad side affects.....flu like symptoms and just freezing cold, shortness of breath and very sore all over. Also my breasts were extremely sore and tender. I stopped taking them as I couldnt carry on feeling this way and now I have taken a very heavy period. Is this normal and can champix affect my cycle?

Detailed Answer:
hello,
thanks for contacting healthcaremagic

Champix is a weak nicotine agonist used for replacement therapy to quit smoking. the most common side effects being nausea, headaches, weakness, change in taste , abdominal bloating and flatulence can actually be very uncomfortable. This is what you have bene going through. it would cause a distaste for smoking and helps in reducing it.
However these symptoms are mostly due to nicotine withdrawal from a high dose to a very lesser dos of nicotine entering your body in form of champix.

These symptoms per se can cause a lot of bodily stress and also effect the progesterone levels as does the smoking. This is the reason that your periods have been preponed and they are heavy this time. However they may reduce with the tretament , once the body settles to the low dose in champix.
The sore tender breast also indicate premenstrual syndrome which is common just before the onset of menses and subside once they stop.

so i suggest you continue the therapy and if bleeding is in excess then you may take Tab Tranexamic acid 500mg thrice a day for 3 days to reduce your bleeding.

Thankyou, I stopped taking the champix completely as I couldnt carry on with the symptoms listed above and also I was still smoking at the time. I have now taken a heavy period just 2weeks after previous. Will my periods regulate from now on as I am no longer taking the champix?

Brief Answer:
yes they should...

Detailed Answer:
thanks for the follow up.
Once you have stopped champix, then it is likely that the next cycles should again get regular , provided smoking is not continued in excess.

This has been a single episode and there was a case to it, so there is no reason they should not regularize by your next monthly.
