Are Mega Doses Of Multivitamins Safe After Bladder Cancer Surgery?

Posted on Thu, 2 Jun 2016
Question: Hello - I would like a dietician or nutritionist or a urologist to respond about the value of taking a multi vitamin pill of mega doses.....I have just had successful bladder cancer surgery.... the low grade tumor was contained within the bladder and completely removed . These vitamins have been recommended by my urologist. I would like another opinion. I have always understood that mega-doses can be harmful. Is this a special blend for bladder cancer patients ?? Here's the content attached :

Please advise if the picture I took did not come through.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Short term replenhment of depleted stores may be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure that I have the necessary training, skill and experience to answer your question and hence have taken up your query. Mega doses of multivitamins actually have no role after bladder cancer surgery and I have not found any strong evidence in the favor of such an use. The rationale that your urologist could have however, is slightly different. Cancer cells deplete the body system of nutrients including vitamins. So, there can be a role of initial replenishment after such a surgery. But the role is temporary and since 'stores' are not significant, it is no use taking long term.

I have checked the attachment. I do not feel the blend to be anything special.

You can take them for a week or so, but I do not see any justification in continuing.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
