Are Multiples Lumps On The Breast Suggestive Of Breast Cancer?

Posted on Wed, 8 Feb 2017
Question: I am 32 years old started having nipple discharge from my right nipple in one spot for over a year. Wasn't really concerned about it because I thought it may have been normal. I went to the doctor for an unrelated reason and mentioned it while I was there. The doctor did a breast exam and found a lump. He sent me to have a mammogram, after the mammogram the radiologist said I needed a sonogram which was performed immediately afterwards. The radiologist found a 6mm palpable mass. I went in for my follow up appt. With my pcp a couple days afterward who has an immediate referral in for a breast surgeon. This was thursday. He said if I don't hear from the brest surgeon by Tuesday to call him. I also had some lab work done. My liver enzymes are extremely high so now I also have to have an ultrasound of my liver and gallbladder done Tuesday. I'm really hoping the 2 are not related. However Friday I noticed that I have 3 small hard knots above the mass that seem to me like enlarged lymph nodes which are still there. I wasn't horribly concerned at first but now that I have those little hard knots I am starting to worry bad. Anyone know what the chances are of it being breast cancer with those symptoms and also what the chances are of it already spreading to my liver? I am really hoping the 2 are not related! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

I read your symptoms and i understand your concerns.
It would be great if you could attach the files of your blood tests,ultrasound,mamography...everything that you did in the hospital for a better opinion.

The symptoms that you describe correlate with a lot of conditions and here are some of those:
-abscess of breast (usually the patient has fever)
-papilloma (bening tumor of breast)
-malignant tumor of breast
-intraductal papilloma

All these have something in comon. A lump and the discharge from the nipple.

Only the bipsy will give us the answer 100% if it is malignant or bening.

About your liver enzymes that are elevated, it is a possibility that the tumor (if it's malignant) has affected it. You need to do an ultrasound of your liver to see if the liver has any problem or not. A CT would be the best choice in this case with IV contrast.

If you have the results of your tests, please send them to me.

Awaiting....

I don't have the test results available unfortunately but I have noticed 2 small knots that came up friday that match up to where the lymph nodes are in my breast I just noticed those could breast cancer cause those to pop up so quickly? They will be doing a biopsy when I see the breast surgeon next week and I am having an ultrasound done of my liver and gallbladder Tuesday morning. I'm just trying to see what the chances are of it being cancer so I can try to mentally prepare for the possibility. thank you so much! oh yeah I don't have a fever for it to be an absess and the doctor said it's not an infection since the discharge has been going on for over a year.

Detailed Answer:
The most important lymph nodes in breast cancer are the axillary lymph nodes.
You should touch yourself under the arm to check if the lymph nodes are enlarged. If they are, it is likely the cancer has spread. This exam is done by the doctors mostly but even you can do this exam at home.

It is possible for this lump to be cancer, but no one can be sure till the biopsy results and the ultrasound of your liver.

Also when you did the ultrasound of your brest, the doctor also checked your axilla and he would have told you if you had lymph nodes due to cancer or not.
