Are Negative HbsAg And VDRL HIV Tests After 1 Month Of Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
I foresee a possible exposure to HIV as I had unprotected sex couple of times last month.
I have recently tested myself for HbsAG, VDRL and both results have arrived and are negative. I am awaiting for the HIV ELISA test results scheduled for tomorrow. Do I need to still worry about the results of this test? or if VDRL is negative, HIV also be negative.

Brief Answer:
High risk exposure or not

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Was your intercourse with a high risk exposure person? Was the exposure with the same person or different persons on these occasions?
VDRL is for testing syphilis, HbsAg for Hepatitis B. ELISA for HIV needs at least 30 days post exposure to be qualified for the screening for HIV.
VDRL and HbsAg are good screening tests so you should not worry about them if they are negative. However HIV is not related to VDRL test at all.

Please let me know.

Thanks Dr XXXXXXX

I am not sure if it was high risk or low risk. let me assume it as high risk to be on a safer side.

Exposure was with a single person on multiple occasions & The last incident took place before a month (i.e 30 days prior).

to be clear on my side i went for a complete test. Though i got the other serological reports negative and i am am nervous about the test results from this ELISA test. I feel little awkward to even go and collect my report from the lab.

I never had any symptoms like flu / swollen glands or rashes... Can HIV be positive even without any symptoms? Is there any other quick test before i go to receive the reports?

Please guide me and i am under tremendous pressure.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely

Detailed Answer:
HIV will present with some symptoms like flu. Very rarely it can present without symptoms. At least rash or enlarged lymph nodes are seen in few before the antibodies turn up in the blood.

If the exposure is more than 30 days HIV screening with ELISA should be a good time. You can get the test report and no need of any other test.

Please do not under pressure before anything is confirmed. There is no point now. Do not worry there is a treatment for everything now a days.

Brief Answer:
No need of further testing now

Detailed Answer:
That's good that you got a non reactive test. For now it confirms that there are no antibodies to HIV that are formed in the body. You do not need further testing for now. You may repeat the same test after 3 months of exposure to check if there are any antibodies formed.

Just wipe off the fear and stay healthy and active.

All the best.
