Are Pus Filled Lumps On The Tail Bone Signs Of Shingles?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Apr 2016
Question: For the last few years I have been expiriencing an outbreak of some type at the top of my but (tailbone) It is like a butt cleavage. I had fallen on rollarblades and somehow hurt it. The area is usually in same place. I rarely ever notice it except by touch. It is about the size of a quarter but more of an oval. Sometimes it has small bumps like a coliflower < sometimes the puss filled bumps form together and make a patterned cluster, it almost looks like ringworm. When I was in Highschool a very mean Dr. made me feel like trash. Throughout the years, I have asked many gyns about this but never had a culture. One dr prescribed me to take 500 mg daily. My curent Dr. saw it after the "pus" stage, basically when it was drying up and he didnt think that it was herpes and recomended not to take the Valtrx. I had an outbreak about 2 weeks ago and just tonight, I saw a very large patch (difficult area to actually see) and it had puss areas. Is this perhaps shingles, have never had any types of break out on my actual genitals, just the butt cleavage

the puss is gone due to hot compress

Brief Answer:
Seems like herpes simplex; Oral antiviral and topical antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have read your question and I have also reviewed the Image.

I can see an eroded area with well defined irregular margins. I would like to keep a possibility of Herpes Simplex, rather than Herpes Zoster/ Shingles. These are different conditions. Herpes simplex recurs, usually at the same site and patients would complain of multiple recurrences. Zoster usually does'nt recur.
History of recurrences and the characteristic morphology of the lesions suggests that this is most likely Herpes. Herpes simplex usually presents with fluid filled cluster of vesicles which soon rupture and may coalesce to form polycyclic erosions.
I would suggest Valacyclovir 500 mg twice daily for a week along with topical antibiotic ointment e.g mupirocin or neosporin ointment.

Brief Answer:
This can only be known by laboratory test

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

It could either Hsv 1 Or Hsv 2. Though Hsv 1 commonly causes oro-labial herpes and Hsv 2 involves genital area, this distinction is not absolute.
Laboratory testing for circulating IgG antibodies against Hsv 1 and Hsv 2 can specifically identify the type of virus.
