Question : Hello,
My 5-year old has been experiencing an earache over the past couple of days. He has had a fever spike almost every week and then get better over several days. Since the fever would improve, it seem that he was just getting exposed to something each time I took him to preschool. After he began complaining of the earache, I took him to the urgent care clinic and they said that his ear canal was bright red. He was prescribed amoxicillin for 10 days. No ear drops were prescribed. Are there alternatives to oral amoxicillin, is it necessary in this case, if so, could you provide some suggestions for administering it to a 50-pound, strong-headed 5-year old?

Brief Answer:
yes it is necessary
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Ear infections are very common at this age.
If the doctor has found red eardrum on examination it indicates middle ear infection or otitis media.
This needs 10 day course of amoxicillin.
Don't worry.
It is the best choice and will be tolerated well by your 5 year old.
No need for ear drops.
The antibiotic course will ensure that the infection is treated well.
Wishing your child good health.

Dr Arun
