Hello,

Thank you for the query.

Do you have any problems with the stool (diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, mucus in stool)? Have you loss some weight recently?
Any nausea, frequent urinating, burning while urinating?
Does your abdomen get bloated occasionally?

Lower left side abdominal pain can be caused by diverticulitis of sigmoid colon, inguinal hernia. As you are over the age of 50, other large intestine diseases like polyps or cancer should be considered as well.

Diverticulitis is an inflammation of diverticles. It is some kind of pouches in the intestine wall. When a peace of stool will stuck in such pouch, inflammation appears. In some cases such inflammation can cause intestine perforation. Diverticles are mostly caused by constipation. So if you have had some chronic constipation, this condition is possible at your case.

Urinary tract infection or stones usually give lower abdominal pain which can radiate to the back. Frequent urinating, burning while urinating, blood in urine can be also present. Fever can appear.

Inguinal hernia is usually caused by increased pressure in abdominal cavity due to coughing or lifting heavy objects. Lump in the groin can be visible, especially when standing and coughing.

Over the age of 50, the risk of colon cancer is significantly higher. That is why every abdominal symptoms should not be neglected and large intestine should be checked. Moreover, every person over the age of 50 should have colonoscopy every 10 years even if there is no symptoms at all.

So in conclusion, I suggest you to visit your doctor and have some tests done. Abdominal ultrasound, blood work, urine analysis should be done at first.
- in case of urine analysis will indicate an infection, antibiotics, increased mineral water intake and cranberries supplements should help.
- if urine analysis will be negative and infection markers will be elevated and diverticle visible in the ultrasound, soft diet and antibiotics should be prescribed. Colonoscopy should be done after an inflammation will be treated.
-if all this tests will be negative, colonoscopy should be the next step.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
