Question: CBC test... Red blood count 5.83 High (4.20-5.80), Hemoglobin 11.9l Low (13.2-17.1), MCV 68.1 Low (80.0-100.0), MCH 20.4 Low (27.0-33.0), MCHC 30.0 Low (32.0-36.0), RDW 18.2 High (11.0-15.0), Iron 25 Low (50-180), Saturation 8 Low (20-48)...everything else on CBC and MBP was in normal range. What do these results mean? My doctor said I maybe anemic and put me on iron pills, but my red blood cells count was high not low. Would like your input.

Brief Answer:
Iron deficiency anemia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir

Thank you for asking ask a doctor service.

I have gone through your query with diligence. Your blood report shows iron deficiency anemia. The count of RBCs not necessarily decreased but RBCs will be smaller and paler. Hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC and iron levels which are low is enough to make a diagnosis as iron deficiency anemia.
Continue iron folic acid and b12 supplements and check you blood after 1 month. You will need at least supplementation for 3 months.
Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help.
Thanks.

Ok!!..She started me on ferrous sulfate last week. Once a year for the past couple of years I have blood work done at doctors office. My iron, hemoglobin, mcv, mch, mchc is low and red blood cells and RDW are high. But I never felt fatigue, weakness, etc. Never took any iron pills and I actually felt fine. Maybe my body just works fine with these numbers.

Brief Answer:
It is not that low to cause symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow-up query.

Your hemoglobin level is not that low to cause symptoms. High RBC is due to abnormal RBCs like microcytic or macrocytic ones. A peripheral blood smear gives such information correctly. RDW also high which indicates you are deficient in iron and vitamins like folic acid and B12. So go on with the therapy.
Wishing you a fast recovery.
Thanks.

Not sure if I need B12. Vitamin B 427, normal (200-1100), serum folate 5.6 normal (greater than 5.4), iron binding capacity normal 297, (250-425), ferritin 178 normal, (38-380).

Brief Answer:
Need to take B12.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow-up query.

It is better to take B12 supplements. It should be above 600 at least. Others are in normal range. So iron and B12 supplements should be taken.
Thanks.

Just had blood work done on 9/2/20. Everything was in the normal range except my Hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC and RDW. Currently taking ferrous sulfate and just completed a 4 week course of antibiotics on 8/25/20. Please look at entire lab report and advise. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
To continue Iron and B12 supplements.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir

Welcome again
Thank you for your follow-up.

I have gone through your reports. Continue taking Iron and B12 supplements for 3 months. Taking vitamin C will enhance absorbtion of iron. From the results there is nothing to worry. Hemoglobin is slightly low. RDW increase is a sign of recovery from anemia.
Thanks.

thanks for your input. If the RDW increase is a sign of recovery from anemia and I am guessing from taking the iron pills, so why has my RDW been elevated on previous blood work even before i started taking the iron pills? It seems like my MCV, MCHC, MCV and hemoglobin are always low, and my RDW is always high when taking an iron pill(which i just started about 2 weeks ago) or before I started taking the iron pills. What mcg of B12 should I take, 500,1000 etc?

Brief Answer:
Your hemoglobin could have been lower than this before.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.
Thank you for your follow-up query.

Your hemoglobin could have been lower than this before. And it started recovering. That is the possibility of high RDW on your first test itself. Other parameters are low because there is a lack of iron and B12.
B12 you can take 500 daily.

Thanks.
