Can Ashwagandha Be Taken For Thyroid Dysfunction?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: I had a thyriodectomy years ago recently I came across a product that has Ashwagandha as part of the ingredients. I read up on this herb and I am checking to see if it is safe for me to take. I found where it helps balance the Adrenals and on and on, but I can not find info on the safety of a person with no thyroid taking it.

Brief Answer:
Ashwagandha thought to induce thyroid hormone production

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking on HCM!
I have gone carefully through your concern.

Ashwaganda is considered as a plant that induces the production of the thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland.

In your case, thyroid gland is removed but there are no studies to confirm (or not) an interference of Ashwagandha in the levothyroxine absorbtion. So if you decide to start using it, i would recommend to take it at least 4 hour after levothyroxine tablets and check the TSH level after 6 weeks, to be sure that Ashwagandha does not interfere with levothyroxine tablets.

Hope i have been helpful.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
